Washing and Treatment of Virgin/RAW/Vietnamese Hair

Human hair wigs require careful maintenance to ensure the hair stays healthy and beautiful, knowing how to wash a wig is essential. Follow the care instructions you get from a qualified distributor because human hair wigs are vastly different from synthetic wigs. When you know how to wash a wig you will minimise hair loss and maximise slay power!!

How to wash a wig:

Your human hair wig needs to be washed every 10 days if you wear your wig daily. If you wash your wig too often it can cause premature hair loss because it puts excessive tension on the hair.

What you will need to wash your wig:

  1. Wide-toothed comb
  2. Towel
  3. T-pins
  4. Sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner
  5. Styrofoam or other head to rest the wig on
  6. We recommend avoiding shampoo and conditioner that contains sulphates. Sulphates are a type of salt which strips the hair of its natural oils, drying it out. Sulphates will cause your hair to lose that oh-so-sexy luster and shine. If you’re on a budget, sulphate-free baby shampoo is an affordable alternative to the expensive salon selections.

The wash process for maximum shine:

  1. It’s important to detangle the hair before you start the wash process. The first step is to spray a detangling conditioner onto the hair to dampen it. Spray it as evenly as possible, this process will make sure you don’t place too much tension on the hair when it is brushed.
  2. Brush the hair gently with the wide-toothed comb. Start at the bottom and be as gentle as possible as you work your way upwards until you reach the roots. If you encounter any tangles, a little extra spray-in conditioner will help to make the hair slippery and easier to detangle.
  3. The best way to avoid getting new tangles in the hair from washing is to keep the wig on a mannequin so it stays in position. Use t-pins to secure the wig to the styrofoam head.
  4. It is easier to work over the sink or in the bath. Using your spray bottle, add water and a little of your sulphate-free shampoo and spritz the hair, starting at the bottom. Work the mixture through the hair evenly. Avoid rubbing the hair to prevent tangles.
  5. Rinse the hair by placing a constant stream of water over it. Once again, avoid rubbing the hair! Tangles are not cool!
  6. Repeat the process with your sulphate-free conditioner. Be sure to leave the conditioner in for 10 minutes so that it soaks into the hair.
  7. Squeeze the hair to get excess water out, do not towel dry by rubbing the hair. You can remove the wig from the styrofoam head and place it on a towel. Wrap it and press it dry by gently twisting the towel. Don’t dry the hair with a hairdryer and keep it away from heat while it is wet. Hair that is exposed to heat while it is wet can get damaged, we recommend air drying it for the best shine.
  8. Once the wig is completely dry, you can style it as usual.

How to wash your bundles:

Bundles are a little less technical, but the same basic rules apply. Avoid tangles so don’t rub the hair. Washing bundles before you fit them is a great time to practice, it cleans the hair and brings out its natural qualities. The same guideline applies to washes in between wearing for maintenance.

What you will need to wash your bundles:

  1. A bowl
  2. Warm water
  3. Sulphate-free shampoo
  4. Sulphate-free conditioner
  5. Metal clips or clasps
  6. Somewhere to hang the bundles to dry

The wash process for maximum shine:

  1. Fill the bowl with warm water (it can be cool water too but avoid hot water). Submerge the hair ensuring the water soaks in, thoroughly.
  2. Apply the sulphate-free shampoo. Stroke the hair in downwards strokes and avoid rubbing or any actions that could cause the hair to tangle. Massage the shampoo in, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
  3. Submerge the hair and using the same downward strokes, pull the shampoo out of the hair. You may need to change the water and do a second rinse.
  4. Repeat with conditioner.

As with the wig, use a towel to pat the hair dry but avoid rubbing at all costs. Once you have most of the excess water off, hang the wig with the clips to allow it to dry naturally.
